How to Choose the Right Coffee Roast for Your Taste
How to Choose the Right Coffee Roast for Your Taste
One of the most common questions we get is: “Should I order light, medium, or dark roast?” The truth is, there’s no single right answer for everyone. The roast level can significantly change the taste of your cup, and the best roast for you is the one that suits your taste and brewing method — not simply the darkest roast on the market.
What’s the Difference Between Light, Medium, and Dark Roast?
Light roast preserves more of the coffee’s natural acidity and original flavors, resulting in a lighter and more distinctive taste with greater clarity. However, it has less body or heaviness on the palate.
Medium roast balances acidity and bitterness while providing a more noticeable body and retaining some of the coffee’s original flavors. That’s why it’s generally the most popular choice — a safe and versatile option for most tastes.
Dark roast significantly reduces acidity and delivers a stronger, richer flavor, closer to the “classic coffee” taste many of us are used to. However, some of the finer details of the coffee’s original flavor may become less noticeable.
Choose Based on Your Brewing Method
If you brew using a cezve (Turkish coffee pot) or moka pot and prefer a strong, bold flavor, a dark or medium-dark roast may suit you better.
If you use a French press or any slow-brewing method, light or medium roasts give the coffee’s flavor details more room to shine.
And if you’re not sure where to start, go with medium roast. It’s an excellent starting point that allows you to decide whether you want to move toward a lighter roast or a stronger dark roast next time.
A Quick Tip If You’re Still Experimenting
Try different roast levels in small quantities before ordering a large amount of a single type. All our coffee sizes are available starting from 50g, giving you the freedom to experiment without committing to a full kilogram of a flavor you may not enjoy.
One final thing to keep in mind: your preferred roast level can change over time depending on the brewing method you’re using at that stage of your life. So there’s nothing wrong with changing your preference from time to time.
The goal is simply to find the cup that feels right for you — not to stick to one roast forever just because it’s considered the “most popular” or the “strongest.”
